After trying again this summer, I gave up and bought the Black and Decker EdgeHog. Its main selling point was that it was electric and not gas. I know that long cords can be a hassle but smelling the exhaust of a gas-powered edger is even worse. Another thing is the motor is next to the blade, so the weight is on the ground, NOT on your shoulder! Not so, I tried used the product but went back to the grass hog. Its okay for digging trenches - if that's all you need it for. My daughter also has one and she is very pleased with its ease of use and durability. I wanted an edger that was moderately priced and did a decent job of edging. I live in Texas, and we have tough clay soil. I have not edged my yard ever, and have lived in my house for almost a year.
Actually parts in the area where you can change from edging to trenching slipped gears fell off! Sent it back and received another one that is great.
I purchased one of these about 8 years ago and it's been chugging along fine ever since [other than replacing blades periodically). We have purchased another house about 3 hours away and I decided to buy another one for there.
We didn't want to hassle with a gas powered edger. It does however get the job done. The edger does a great job where the edge of the sidewalk is vertical. Where the concrete is slightly tilted or curved, it does a reasonable job.
Will buy another when I wear this one out. Rated it 4 out of 5 stars because it doesn't have the cutting power of a gas edger but it certainly is good enough for me. I'll put up with the cord compared to chokes, mixing fuel, starting problems, and smell. This item broke down after one usage. Best advice to you for first time use on over growth, use a string trimmer to clear over growth, and then use the edger. Use a blower/rake to clear your path, and then make one more pass with the edger.
I purchased this edger as a replacement for an electric edger that gave out. This is a very powerful edger that does the job quickly. Got ours a few days ago, and went to work. We have Zoisa in our front yard.
Very easy to move around the yard. Electric edgers have traditionally been the laughing stock of the landscaping world - but this one breaks that tradition.

I would probably have purchased a more expensive gasoline model if our yard was much larger. DRUM SANDER.
