Benefits Of Garden Fountains

By Clinton Nace

In today's busy world, garden fountains will help minimize stress in our lives. Stress is a fact of life for many people. A garden could be one of the few places you could take a breath and step back from all the frenzy. Make your garden a sanctuary by including elements that soothe your senses. The calming effect of water in the form of garden fountains is priceless. The sound of running water has a natural calming effect. Outdoor gardens make beautiful art pieces that add a unique feel to your personal space.

The sound of flowing water can mask undesirable background noises like traffic and electronics. Cascading water produces negative ions, which help cleanse the air of pollutants and refresh the body and mind, resulting in improved mood and increased energy. Running water also provides natural humidity.

A popular description for garden fountains is a self-contained fountain. This means water is circulated within the system to create effect. No external piping is necessary since all is hidden within the self contained garden fountains themselves. Many of these items contain ponds but of small size normally and the fountain units only rarely contain fish. Perhaps a few small goldfish is the norm. The traditional heavy concrete garden fountains are being replaced by fiberglass and other lightweight material garden fountains. Because modern fountains are lightweight and easy to move around these fountains are being used indoors as well as on patios and garden walls. Wall fountains especially have become popular because installation of these highly realistic lightweight products is now easy and can be done without any special tools or fastenings.

Garden fountains should be cleaned every month depending on the type of water you are using and the type of environment in which it is placed. Products are available at hardware stores, garden stores and pet stores that can reduce the growth of algae in your fountain and/or break up mineralization into finer particles that don't stick as readily to your water fountain. Never use bleach as it can damage the pump and the water fountain itself. A thorough fountain cleaning would include changing the water in the fountain. For a small fountain this is relatively easy, just take it to the sink. For a medium sized fountain, you might tip it over outdoors, or siphon the water as one would in cleaning an aquarium. Then wipe all elements thoroughly until free of debris and refill with clean, fresh water. Remember to unplug the fountain pump prior to emptying your fountain.

You can choose garden fountains based on the materials they are made of. Resin can be built in various shapes, producing wonderful effects. Care should be taken to obtain best quality, as painted resins won't last long in rugged weather. Fiberglass fountains are very popular for outdoor purposes. It is best suitable for compact, modern fountains for your patio or garden. Concrete fountains are ideal for any kind of garden background. They come in small and also large sizes.
