Determining How To Change A Broken Cord On A Sash Window

By Jacob Phillips

A sash window has cords that rip or break as they age. It does not require much money to fix them. In fact, it can be a do-it-yourself project. No home improvement expertise or experience is necessary. Here are some steps to take in determining How to change a broken cord on a sash window.

The first thing one will have to do is gather tools for this repair job. Some of the tools needed are a lubricant, a screwdriver and a utility knife. Other tools are a putty knife, new roping for the window cord and a hammer. Once the tools are in hand, the next step is to remove the window from the frame.

After the window is removed, the sash cord needs to be accessed. Some windows have access panels. Older windows, on the other hand, may not have them. If that is the case, then the window casing must also be removed.

The first step is in getting to the sash cords. Those windows that have an access panel will have it on the side jambs. Inside the panel are the weights, the pulleys and the sash. At the time that access is made, any old cord on the sash weights and the weights themselves need to be taken out. Once the cord roping is detached, put the weights back. They should be put on top of a wood block that is four to five inches thick.

The window pulleys need to be lubricated. They also need to to be cleaned if they are dirty. Then, the rope must be fed through the pulley. This task can be simplified by taping new cord roping to old cord roping. Then thread the roping through the pulley. Take the older cords out of the access panel. As those cords are removed, the new ones will be threaded through the pulley.

The weights will have a hole in them. Run the cord through those weights and tie a knot at the bottom. Usually, there is only one knot used and it is put in a fitted groove. The rope will typically extend between two and three inches past the hole of the pulley. Follow the process above on the other side. When both sides are done with the basics, add finish nails and trim back to the window. If so desired, choose a stain and finish to match the room's atmosphere and decor.

Learning How to change a broken cord on a sash window does not need professional home maintenance training nor does it need a lot of time. A few hours in the afternoon and the right tools and instructions will get those cords changed. These tips are a guide to what one needs to complete the project.
