Ways to Embellish and Design Your Teen's Bedroom

By Tonie Sadhu

While your children start approaching adulthood, their interests and needs start to change dramatically. They will quickly outgrow their bedrooms as different requirements need to be factored in and so you need to plan for this in plenty of time. An adolescent is truly a young adult who will have their own ideas for their room so you should anticipate some negotiating and compromises. This article should examine some of the things you need to consider when designing and decorating a bedroom for a teen.

The first thing to look at is whether the current bedroom is big enough for a teen. Should you have the choice, you may want to move your teen to a bigger room in the home or expand the one they are currently in. The walls are likely to need to be repainted utilizing neutral colors which are going to give your teen options on how they want to decorate it. Teenagers like to put up all kinds of posters and images on their walls so a neutral tone allows that flexibility. Furthermore, try to visualize any additional storage space that may be required for the various possessions and clothes that may accumulate.

During the time your child grows into being a teenager the bedroom becomes a place where they will spend more time. You may want to make their space as comfortable as is possible so adding a small sofa or lay-z-boy chair are good options. You may want to increase lighting and maybe add shelf space if your teen will be doing a lot of reading and writing in their room. Other aspects of the room need to be reevaluated, like the curtains, so that it looks more like a room for a teenager and not a little kid.

Your teenager will likely be doing a lot more studying and homework in the bedroom. Besides having a decent sized desk, you may also want to consider internet access in the room as well. You should add some supplemental electrical outlets for computers and desk lamps. You'll discover that your teen will use their bedroom as their own private space and do not want to be disturbed. Acquiring a bigger bed for your teen is an expensive proposition but with planning, it can be done.

You want to carry out your best to ensure that your teenager's bedroom is going to be a place that they can chill out, study and be productive and a place that they can call their own.
