Going to a carpet store is always an adventure. Trying to work out what colour of carpeting to get can be a daunting task. Everyone seems to have an opinion on what is best. Sometimes you just want a certain colour! Even if it defies all current decorating trends. Yet with carpeting being a pretty long term decision, it's best to choose wisely.
I remember my mother was determined to have this emerald green carpeting in our house when I was growing up. She had a friend who had it, and she always remembered loving it. We searched and searched, until she finally decided on one. However, when we brought it home, it was much too dark, and for several years we lived with what was a dark green carpeting that showed every little bit of fluff!
Sometimes though, it does not matter about the practicalities. When you want a certain colour, you want a certain colour. Like when I was 10 years old, I so wanted yellow carpeting! My mother insisted it was a mistake, and that it would get "trashed" and end up looking terrible. I didn't care though! They let me had it, and I enjoyed every minute of it, despite the fact that it did get a little yucky!
Lighter coloured carpeting is often popular in newer homes when builders want to make the home look larger as lighter carpeting opens up a room and makes it appear bigger. However the downside to lighter carpeting is that you really have to stay on top of it to keep it looking nice.
So despite the fact that dark carpeting can make a room look smaller, it can feel cosier, and you may not be so worried about spilling things on it. It might need to be vacuumed more often, but there is not that stress over stains.
