I love western decor and I've used this style to decorate my own home. One of the things I've done, and you can too, is to use natural stone in your accents, decor, and outdoor landscapes.
an easy thing you can do to enhance your western decor is to add stone accents to your indoor spaces. This will cost you very little, as you can grab some stones from the outdoors, literally anywhere you want to look. For a few ideas...
1. Add an assortment of small stones to a wooden bowl as a centerpiece to a coffee table or shelf. Better yet, use a variety of stone sizes with 3 different bowl sizes, creating a grouping of bowls. This display would look good on your dining room table or other shelf.
2. If you have silk flower arrangements within your interior spaces, place flower pots on flat stones. Be aware not to use this idea with live plants, as watering without a saucer to catch the water will result in damaged furniture.
3. arrange stones in a stack so that the top surface is flat. Then, on top you can place a western accent such as a cowboy boot, Indian art, or other item you feel would go well here.
4. Divide rooms into separate living spaces by using stone walls. However, be careful to scale the wall and stones to the size of the room. Don't overwhelm the room with a stone wall.
5. If you find some different looking, unusual stones, glue them onto a piece of thin board or photo backing, frame them as artwork, and hang on the wall framed in a natural wood colored frame.
6. Fill canning jars or other glass jars with small stones and place on shelves as a display. This works great in kitchens.
One of the most common uses for stone is in outdoor landscapes. For sure, you may have thought of this before. A stone wall can really contribute to the western theme of any space. You can use dry, stacked, flat stones, or ones that you've bought that are real or fake. All looks are great and can be suited to a wide variety of tastes and styles going with almost any type of home. Here are some tips for landscaping with stone:
1. One of the simplest walls for most every day homeowners that don't have specific knowledge and skills is dry stacked stone walls. These structures don't need mortar or cement to hold them in place. Simple begin with a LEVEL layer on the bottom and continue moving up, stacking stones together as tightly as possible. a perfect fit is probably not possible but that's alright. This type of wall can take a fair amount of time to do right but it's worth the effort.
2. Using mortar with flat stones is another way to create a rustic looking wall. This method will result in a sturdier wall and the entire structure will look more durable.
3. Build a rock garden by placing larger sized rocks within your planting beds at varying levels, creating mini planting areas within the larger flower bed.
4. River rocks are another variety of stone that can be used. These must be purchased however, as they are rounded and smooth. You won't find these in the wilderness except, as you probably guessed, in rivers. Simply stack these stones along a slope in the shape of a river.
5. Most hardware stores stock quite a few styles of faux stone products from which to build a multitude of walls.
As you can see, I've only skimmed the surface of the large variety of applications of using stone to enhance the western decor of your home. Get creative. Search around at stores and the internet. You're sure to get some great inspiration.
