Facts About Pond Algae & Pond Algae Control

By Roland Stockwell

Do you know that if you have a large pond or lake within your property it should be carefully maintained for the whole year especially during the warmest months? This is because algae can pose quite a threat to the lake or pond's health. Learn about some of the facts on pond algae and what your natural pond treatment options can be.

Benefits brought about by algae to the ecosystem of the pond or lake comes in both positive and negative. If it exists in smaller amounts it can be useful as fish, insects and protozoa living in and around the water consume it. The problem arise when there is too much algae already because it can be a real nuisance as it reduces the oxygen level in the water causing difficulty of breathing for your fish to the point of even killing them.

There are many different types of algae, but one type common in ponds and lakes is called filamentous algae. This is a thin and stringy organism that can begin to grow just as the winter is ending and the temperatures begin to rise a bit in early spring. While small amounts might not be a problem, large amounts of filamentous algae are definitely not good for your pond.

Another common type of algae is planktonic algae, which can bloom rapidly during hot weather. Within just a day or two of the beginning of a bloom, the water color could change to completely green or even brown, making the water resemble mud. Like all algae, in proper amounts, these planktonic algae are beneficial supplying food for zooplankton which then is eaten by fish. However, as with filamentous algae, an abundance of this algae can result in fish kills, particularly at the end of the summer season and the early fall, when this algae dies suddenly.

In order to fight different algae types treating the water with the use of a natural product like AquaSpherePRO is highly recommended. This biodegradable sphere is full of proprietary bacteria to help in keeping balanced water in your pond all throughout the year. No chemicals can be found contained in this product and it has been approved by veterinarians.

Using this pond treatment product is extremely easy, as you simply toss the spheres into your water, and each sphere lasts for up to 30 days. You then simply toss in new spheres to continue keeping your pond clean. Treatment in some parts of the country may be recommended done throughout the year but in some regions about six to seven months of treatment is good enough in preventing algae bloom thus keeping water safe and clean for you.
