Choosing Cabinet Knobs And Pulls

By Roxie Ocegueda

Of all the rooms in the house, the kitchen can be the most fun to remodel. It is often the most popular room, where friends and family sit around the table sharing meals, sipping coffee, or munching snacks. When considering remodeling, you might also want to think of replacing the cabinet handles and knobs. This is especially true if you've decided to refinish the cabinets.

Of course, there are other cabinets in the house that need to be pulled open. Bathrooms have storage spaces, and if you have a laundry room, there may be an enclosed space for your bleach, detergents, and such. Don't forget the drawers, too, which are usually designed to be opened with a knob of some sort. When you think about it, handles come in handy all over the house.

There are a few factors to bear in mind while choosing what will be just right for your home. For example, placement is important. It may look nice to have a pull at the bottom of the door on an upper cabinet, or perhaps it will be better along the side. If the cabinet is set low, for example in the kitchen, it would be easier to open if it has a handle on its top side.

Another good idea is to count the number of pieces you will need. You'll want to be certain that you have enough for your project, otherwise you'll finish and then realize you're one or two short. Until you purchase the final few, you'll be forced to use the old ones, or break your fingernails while scratching at the edge of the door to get it open.

Having the right screws is something else to consider. It's a good idea to bring a sample along with you if you go to a regular store. Otherwise, you'll need to measure. When the screws are too long, the fit won't be right. If they're too short, the handle will come right off in your hand when you pull it. It's also important to measure the distance between the screw holes.

While you're in the planning phase, there are a couple more things to remember. One is that you can add a back-plate, which always looks nice. Also, consider how much you're willing to pay. You might have more cabinets in the house than you realized, and it can add up.

The styles and varieties are numerous. There are different finishes, materials, and colors to choose from. For example, you might choose a type that is round and made of plastic, or something that is metal and shaped like a fish. You can even pick unfinished wood, and paint them different colors, if you like.

People who are ready to install new cabinet handles and knobs usually know that they're entering into a fair-sized project. Fortunately, choosing the styles, materials and colors is a fun part of the job. Also, when you see the end results, you'll be happy that you made the decision to get started.
